Characterization of Parthenocarpic Fruit of ‘Miyazaki-wase No. 1’, a Tropical Squash (<i>Cucurbita moschata</i> L.) Cultivar

Parthenocarpy is a trait in which fruit set and development are induced without fertilization, thereby contributing to labor saving production. In Cucurbita species, parthenocarpic cultivars have been reported pepo, but not maxima moschata. this regard, the identification of clarification their characteristics will contribute greatly research breeding species. study, we aimed genetically screen diverse accessions for high ability elucidate discovered by screening. We screened 33 from squash genetic resources found that moschata cultivar, ‘Miyazaki-wase No. 1’, exhibited parthenocarpy. order clarify characteristics, examined rate, expansion, quality 1’. spring fall experiments, rate was lower than pollinated fruit. On other hand, there no significant difference transverse diameter weight fruits at harvest. These results indicated inferior fruit, although expansion almost same as addition, compared composition with harvest after storage experiment. The demonstrated all compositions between β-carotene concentration significantly one month two months did affect harvest, had an effect on metabolism during storage. showed 1’ cultivar clarified its characteristics. Based results, progress species anticipated future.
